Health & Narcissism

Fair warning, this entire entry is about fitness and health, nothing else.

About a year and a half ago I’d been in Edmonton for about a year, working at BioWare.  I had just uploaded this picture to Facebook:

My biggest: 176

Kristina pointed out I’d put on some weight.  She’s good for giving you her honest opinion and I truly appreciated it, because until that moment I somehow hadn’t realized it.  I must have been in major denial, somehow I hadn’t realized when I bought pants they were size 34 now, not 32 like they used to be.  When I compared newer pictures with older ones like the one below, it became clear I’d put on weight…  And become less emo.

An old self-portrait

I weighed myself at 176.  I don’t know how much I weighed in Winnipeg, but I think I remember it being like 140 (I was thin but scrawny, no muscle).  So in the year and a bit since I’d moved to Edmonton and started working at BioWare I’d put on almost 40 pounds!  I’d heard others talk of the “BioWare 40”…  And it was all fat, definitely not muscle.  If anything I may have lost some muscle.  I thought about it: In Winnipeg I worked fulltime at Rogers Video, a job that required you to be on your feet all day, for 8 hours, running around helping customers etc.  My feet and legs were always tired at the end of a shift.  On top of that I went on long walks all the time in Winnipeg, sometimes 2 hours long around the city with my headphones on.

In Edmonton I worked at BioWare, a desk job.  I went for lunch with my friends every day, and it was rarely healthy.  Then I drove home, never going on any walks, or really any kind of activity.  In fact I’d gotten into the habit of picking up fast food every day on the way home…  It was clear I’d need to make a major lifestyle change if I wanted to break this trend.  And it wasn’t as simple as returning to how I lived in Winnipeg, since working at a desk made it kind of hard to get in the 8 hours of standing and walking I did at Rogers Video.  This would need to be a conscious effort with some real sacrifice.

At first I didn’t really know what I was doing.  I started the P90x cardio program, but my diet was still pretty bad.  I was also impatient.  I thought I must be doing it wrong when I didn’t lost more than a pound after my first week.  When Chad moved to Edmonton he decided he wanted to get in better shape too, so we both got free memberships at the gym in the hotel BioWare shared the building with.

Cardio with Chad!Chad was all about strength training.  That had been how he lost all the weight the first time, so why not do it again?  I trusted his judgement and went along, but I was really self conscious about how weak I was, and I also knew it was going to be a while before I saw results.  In the end I decided I wanted to focus on cardio and diet to lose weight faster, and figured maybe some day down the road I’d get into weight training.

Once I focussed on cardio and went all out with it I began seeing results fast.  I was losing 2-4 pounds a week.  I was doing an hour of cardio 6 days a week, up to 1100 calories at a time.  My diet had changed and was much healthier.  I was definitely still doing some things wrong though.  I was starving myself a bit more than was healthy, especially combined with cardio.  But the results were motivating.

Down to 160!

By the time things at BioWare were coming to an end and I was prepping for the move to Halifax I was down to 160.  I’d lost 14 pounds in 2 months.  Not bad!

Once I got to Halifax I was stressed out, and my lifestyle started to slip.  No more gym, my diet got worse, etc.  But when I finally found a scale to weigh myself I found I was 155.  I’d continued to lose weight, despite it all.  That meant even with a bit of a slip, my lifestyle was still better than in Edmonton, so my weight was still slowly adjusting to a better lifestyle.

I eventually got a membership at a gym down the road from Longtail, but with the long hours I was working, the fact that I was bussing home instead of driving, and the dark winter nights, I didn’t end up going very often.  But I was making more money than I ever had, so I decided to just go buy my own elliptical.  Once I got that I started doing cardio at least 4 times a week, and improved my diet once again.  But after almost 2 months I’d only lost 3 pounds, down to 152.  After losing 24 pounds through cardio and diet, it was beginning to feel like I’d plateaued.

Elliptical!

And that brings us to present day.  I’m in the best shape I’ve been in since Winnipeg, I can fit back into all the clothes from those days, but still not quite to the form I had.  I still have a gut when I sit, though substantially smaller than at my worst.  When I stand it’s easy enough to suck it in.  But I want better.  I want even better than I looked in Winnipeg!  The success of losing 24 pounds has made me realize the body is a machine, and with some willpower, if you put in the work, you’ll get the results.  Period.

That being said, I’ve lost all the weight I’m going to on my current lifestyle.  My moderately healthier diet and cardio isn’t giving me results anymore.  At this rate I’d lose maybe 4-5 pounds a year, probably less.  So unless I want to increase my cardio to take up every free moment it’s time to take a new approach.  Like I said in Edmonton, when the time came I’d do strength training.

WeightsSo earlier this week I bought a small weight kit and some other equipment for 70$,  I’ve improved my diet even further, and I also changed how I do my cardio, combining cardio with a decent leg workout.

My new plan:

  • Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are my work out days.  I alternate muscles to allow them time to heal.  In between days are for resting and healing.
  • Tuesdays are shoulders and biceps.  Thursdays are triceps, back and chest.  Sundays are core (abdominal area) workouts.
  • After about 30-40 minutes of the weight training I then do my new, more extreme cardio on the elliptical.
  • New cardio:  Instead of just running on lowest settings for an hour, I go the complete other way.  I increase the incline to full and alter between 3/4 and full resistance for 45 minutes.  I burn calories much faster this way, and I’m giving my leg muscles a more legit workout then just low-intensity jogging.  I’m dripping in sweat and my legs are burning by the time I’m done.
  • After the cardio I immediately do one last set of weight training exercises to muscle failure and then shower!
  • Much better diet (details later in this post).

I’ve really taken it to a new level.  This is much more extreme than the old plan.  Before I just ran until my body had to burn fat.  I’m still doing that, but also adding muscle all over my body.  Muscle burns more calories, meaning I’ll raise my natural metabolism and burn fat while I’m sitting at my desk at work.

I’ve also begun to make another big diet change, the biggest since my first one back in Edmonton.  No more starving myself all day only to gorge on snacks in the evening.  I’m eating 3-4 smaller meals a day, and healthy meals.  For example, lunch today was a medium sized chicken pita on whole wheat with very light mayo, spinach, bean sprouts, tomatoes and cucumbers!  Next time I go grocery shopping I’m buying 80% fresh.  WAY too much of what I eat has predominantly come out of a box or bag.  No more!  So from now on it’ll be largely lean chicken breast, sliced deli turkey, salmon, brown rice, etc..  I’ll thaw and cook it myself.  My cheat day of the week will be Saturdays, if I’m really craving some junk food with my videogames, or a pizza, etc.

Back to size 32!Losing 24 pounds in under a year took a lot of hard work, but it felt great.  Recently I tried on my old Edmonton pants, and that really made me realize what I’d accomplished.  Success breeds confidence, and I’m confident this is exactly what I needed to break through this plateau and begin another year long success story.  And so far I’m enjoying this next level of healthier living.  It will be weird to watch the scale go up now though, since I’ll be putting on muscle, which weighs more than fat.  Hopefully by this time next year though I’ll look the best I ever have!  Wish my luck!

Friend Times

Is drinking with friends on Skype technically drinking alone?

ScreenClipds

I’ve been working out a lot and eating less, trying to lose weight, and it’s been since the Dance On Broadway PS3 release party since I drank.  So ya, I’m pretty drunk right now, chatting with Brett and Linda on Skype.  Good times.  I miss my group!

Elliptical

So a few weeks ago I got my raise and had the back pay applied to my check.  I decided to treat myself and went out to buy a new pc.  I ended up making a healthier choice and bought an elliptical.  A really nice one.  I have a gym membership, but it’s a hassle to get there after work, then bus home, etc.  All I use is the elliptical anyway, so this just made more sense, and now I’ll use it much more often and lose weight Open-mouthed smile

It was delivered on Tuesday.  I didn’t realize how much construction would be involved, as it came as just a box of parts.  Took 2.5 hours of construction to put it together.  The instructions said it was a 2 person job but I managed on my own, with a few awkward steps like holding something with my elbow while trying to hold a screw steady with one hand and the screwdriver in the other, etc.  Plus I had to hook up the electronics.  Putting the thing together was a work out in its own right!  And then it left me with a ton of cardboard.  Took 3 trips to take it all out to the recycle bin at the apartment block down the road Smile with tongue out

IMG_3035IMG_3039IMG_3062

But in the end I did get it together and got to break it in with my first workout that night.  A half hour run that burned over 300 calories.  This was a great purchase.  I want to lose another 15 pounds over the 30 I’ve lost since Edmonton.  Mainly the last of my gut and a bit of face-fat, lol.  Wish me luck!

2010

New Year's Eve. Another year comes to a close. 2010 was a big one for me. This time last year I was living with my cousin; my first term at BioWare had just ended and I was starting my 3 month break between contracts and learning the Unreal 3 Engine. I'd put on weight and decided it was time to do something about it, and began working out, though it took a while to figure out just how to get what I wanted out of it. I applied for a full-time position on the Mass Effect team, but didn't get it (my good friend Reid did). I'd been living in Edmonton for just over a year and figured things were settling down. I had a life in Edmonton and was ready to stay there. But life, it seems, had other plans.

After my 3 months off I went back to BioWare to work on Dragon Age 2, and hope this year would bring a full-time salary position. But if it didn't I was happy working terms at BioWare as long as it took. It was my best shot at getting into the industry (or so I thought) and I liked Edmonton. And Chad was planning on moving out to Edmonton that summer, so good times were ahead.

I created a term-tester progress report at work and quickly made it onto the content team, responsible for one of the major plots in the game. The economy seemed be lightening up a bit so I had at least a small hope that a full-time QA position would open up.

Chad moved out that summer. We rented a really nice apartment from my good friend Dave and I drove to Saskatoon to meet them half way, and we transferred all his stuff from his Mom's car to mine. It was great having my best friend living in the same city again. And it made Edmonton feel even more like home. Olga would be moving out soon too. Life was looking great. Chad met all my friends, started working at BioWare with me, we started working out together after work. It was the kind of life I'd always wanted.

A few months later Kristina and Olga came and visited us in Edmonton, and it was a total blast. Edmonton was my home now, and having my friends from Winnipeg visiting and meeting my friends in Edmonton was amazing.

At work there was talk of some QA positions opening up, and I felt I had a real shot at one. Several of the higher ups let me know I wasn't far off in that assumption. I started to get very optimistic. But it wasn't long before a major bombshell was dropped on me. EA had instituted a 2 term limit for contract workers. And I was almost half way through my second... That meant if I didn't get full-time within the next 7 months I could never work for EA again as a term, and it would make it MUCH harder to get into the industry in a full-time salary position. It was all or nothing for the rumored full-time QA positions opening up.

Sure enough, 3 positions were opened. Hundreds applied. The QA department was bloated with terms, all chomping at the bit to get in full-time. 2 positions were in Edmonton and 1 in Montreal. I cast a wide net and applied for all 3.

They made a short list for all 3 positions, about 5 people per list, out of the hundreds that applied. I managed to make it onto 2 of them. One for the Edmonton position and one for the Montreal position. Needless to say I was really hoping for the Edmonton position. It was for a content lead position, something I was already kind of doing, and there was heavy emphasis on management, which my term tester progress report showed I had the vision for.

It was a tense week as I waited for the news. Nathan and Chad were both very supportive. And finally, after one of the longest weeks of my life, I got called in by the QA Lead. He let me know it was a tough decision but they went with someone else. It was devastating. I knew what I was really finding out was my life in Edmonton was coming to an end. Once my term ran out at BioWare I wouldn't be able to come back for a third, and I knew the chances of another QA position opening in the next few months was extremely unlikely. If I wanted to stay in the industry, and make a career for myself doing something I loved and was good at, I'd have to move.

Around this time I got in contact with someone I'd worked with at BioWare who had moved to Halifax to work at a new studio, Longtail. She recommended me for a QA Lead position that had just opened up. I expressed my interest and had a phone interview which went really well. As the gears turned and I was informed they were going to fly me to Halifax for an in person interview, it was very bittersweet. On one hand I was on the verge of getting a full-time salary position in the industry, something I'd been fighting for for almost 2 years now which had started to feel impossible, but it meant leaving behind the life in Edmonton I'd spent the last 2 years building. I had some great friends in Edmonton, including my best now that Chad had moved down. I loved my life there, and did not want to leave.

I flew to Halifax and was picked up by a limo at the airport. I was put in a nice hotel for my stay and had my interview, a whole-day ordeal that had me interviewed by 2 people from every department. But I felt it went really well. I spent the rest of the day exploring Halifax, and it really stated to dawn on me. I would probably be moving here.

When I got back to Edmonton Chad and I sat on the balcony and discussed the crazy turn of events. We spent over a year imagining how great it would be for him to move down, for us to live in the same city again, and both work at BioWare, one of the best companies to work for in the world. And just a few months after he arrived, I might be leaving. And I really didn't want to. It was pure sacrifice for my career.

Sure enough I got the call from Longtail offering me the job. I accepted. I'd be moving in 3 weeks. I gave my notice to BioWare. Life became a dream I was drifting through. It was like Edmonton was rejecting me like foreign matter. I trained my replacement at work, and moved offices. I was back in the office I started in. I hung out with my friends as much as I could, and on my last week Nathan threw me TWO going away parties. Such a great friend, and one I didn't want to have to leave.

But as I sat at the bonfire at the second party and looked around at all my friends and reflected on how far I'd come since that depressing night in my cousin's basement when I first arrived in Edmonton, I knew I'd be ok. I'd done this before, I could do it again.

And after an extremely stressful ordeal with some incompetent movers and an emotional goodbye with my best friend, I left for a week in Winnipeg before leaving for Halifax. This really sucked. When I moved to Edmonton from Winnipeg there was some personal reason to it, I felt I had to leave to grow, find my place in the world, etc. There was no personal reason for leaving this time. I wanted to stay. It was purely career.

My week in Winnipeg didn't help. It felt great to be home, I missed it. I felt so lost, and Winnipeg felt so familiar. But after a week I got on a plane and left it behind. When I landed I was in Halifax, what felt like a completely random city. But I wasn't on visiting, I wasn't leaving, I lived here now.

I spent a month in a corporate hotel, before moving to the worst area in town in a shitty apartment. The startup costs of moving meant I was completely broke all the time. Work was intimidating, and at first felt unwelcoming. I felt completely lost. I couldn't go back to my life in Edmonton, BioWare was no longer an option. I couldn't go back to my life in Winnipeg, in a lot of ways it wasn't there anymore. I'd drifted apart from a lot of my friends, and one of my best friends there wasn't there anymore! Chad had moved to Edmonton! I felt like there was no home anymore. All the things I missed couldn't be retrieved. My first few months in Halifax were among the darkest of my life.

But, I'd done it before, and even though it ended up being a lot harder than my move to Edmonton, I did start to form a life. Work began to get better, and eventually became fun. I made friends at work, and even outside of work. I met Ryan through a friend and ended up moving in with him in a nice place in a much nicer area. Money really started to flow. Things were finally starting to feel better. And I had a career now! And while the lifestyle required by this industry has been very taxing, it's also been very rewarding. Life is an adventure. I've done so much I never thought I'd do, and seen some things I never expected to. I've walked the waterfront during a hurricane. I've sat and dangled my legs off the edge of the continent while the waves crashed down below. It's been a wild ride so far!

After almost 5 months in Halifax I came back to Winnipeg for a visit, and Chad did as well so we got to meet up. I'll write a more in depth entry for my trip, but I will say it's been great to be back. I reconnected with Tim, Brett and Linda after a 2 year estrangement. But my friendship with Kristina seems to be hitting a low point, which is very disappointing. But that's what 2010 has been. Ups and downs, surprise detours, life lessons, and change. Progress.

The year ahead is so different from the last. Longtail, QA Lead, Halifax, Atlantic Ocean, new friends, career and adventure! Here's to 2011!

26 Pounds!

I started packing a few things for my Winnipeg Xmas trip (leave to the airport right from work on the afternoon of Wednesday the 22nd!).  As I was going through my clothes I came across my old Edmonton jeans and tried them on.  That made my day, they used to fit without a belt, now they won’t stay up without me holding on to them.  It’s awesome to know I’ve lost all that weight since then!

Finally Here

I moved in to the new place on Thursday!  The move was pretty painless, Ryan, my new roommate, helped.  The new place is SO much nicer.  And the area is waaaay better too.  The first night after moving in we ordered some pizza and rented videogames.  Life finally feels real here.  I’m not some shadow of myself trying to survive.  I actually had fun, and felt like myself.  Maybe it’s because until now my weekends were sitting alone in my apartment, not speaking a work until I was back at work on Monday.  Making a new friend and living with someone is 2 birds with one stone!  Over the weekend we caught a movie, and Ryan still hadn’t checked out downtown so we did that as well.

While we were downtown I did some window shopping and found some nice clothes I want get, namely a really nice jacket.  And now that money is freed up, I’m looking into joining the gym down the street from work.

I seem to be caught up on all my expenses as well, so I FINALLY have money again.  It was pretty bad for a while with all the initial moving costs (remember I moved TWICE).  But money is freeing up and I have actually quite a bit of spending money left over on each check now.  I finally get to see the money of my new job.  And I’ve decided I’m going to park my car.  I finally got around to calling to switch my car insurance to Nova Scotia and they wanted to charge me 250$ a month!  I paid 150$ in Alberta.  I rarely use it as it is, like maybe three times a month.  And that’s usually for grocery shopping, and Ryan said I can just tag along with him when he does his grocery shopping.  The odd time I do need a car I can just pay for a cab.  There’s no way I’ll use 250$ a month in cabs, so I’m still saving money.  Still, I love driving, never thought the day would come when I voluntarily gave up the right.  We’ll see though, I can always change my mind and insure it later.

In the meantime I don’t mind taking the bus.  The view from the bus stop outside our place is amazing!  We living up on a big hill so we get an amazing view of Halifax.  Especially at night when all the city lights are glimmering below.

The one downside of not driving is no road-trips.  But I suppose I can rent a car, it’s not too expensive.  Next Spring I’ll probably do that so I can go on a mini-roadtrip to Prince Edward Island, it’s only about 4 hours away.  I’ve always wanted to drive across the Confederation Bridge.

But ya, life is feeling so much better out here.  Having a friend and roommate, living in a nice place in a nice area, and having spending money again all add up to make things much more manageable.  Life was pretty dark for a while, but I’m really beginning to enjoy life out here.

So on that note, I leave you with a video tour of the new place!

Results!

I woke up this morning and had a very nice surprise. I can now fit into the last pair of jeans I couldn't fit into back in Edmonton. I remember when I couldn't even button them closed, and now I can wear them quite comfortably, even sitting. So I'm officially size 32 waist again, and back to my Winnipeg weight.

I started 9 months ago with no idea how to go about it. I was eating better and working out, but it wasn't until about 3 months ago that I really figured out what worked for me. I know I wasn't "fat" but I'd been skinny my whole life, and I definitely wasn't skinny any more. It feels good to like how I look again. I've had several people comment that I look a lot skinnier than I was earlier this year. I still have some work to do, I want to lose the last remaining bit of my gut, and then do some muscle training for a bit more definition. But it feels good to have a visible difference!

Before (hard to see the difference from this pic, but I was kind of avoiding the camera at the time...)

Progress

I’ve been seeing some pretty motivating results lately at the gym.  I’ve foregone weight training for cardio.  Hour and a half, 7 days a week, with a good diet all week.  40 minutes of interval, then the rest is a sustained pace, and the odd high-intensity sprint.  I burn AT LEAST 600 calories of cardio a day.  Usually 700.  I’m currently losing about half a pound a day!  I can see a visible difference now.  My face is thinner and I have less of a gut!

I started at 176 about 2-3 weeks ago.

7-28-2010 9-55-34 AM

Goal Setting Recommendation: To move to the next weight range you need to weigh 159 pounds to be in the NORMAL weight range.

I’ve lost 8 pounds since I started, and need to lose 9 more to get into the healthy range.  So 2-3 more weeks.  My current goal is 155.  Once I reach it though, I’ll probably just set a new goal like 145.

Pretty soon I should be able to fit into all the clothes I have from Winnipeg.  And my goal is to be in even better shape than I was then.  Once I have lost my gut and at a body-fat percentage I’m happy with I will start re-introducing weight training and bring my caloric intake up a bit to get a bit more muscle and definition.  By next summer, I’m hoping to look the best I’ve ever looked!

It’s so awesome to finally be seeing results and have a clear plan on how to proceed.  I’ve been trying to lose weight for about a year now, and it used to be so shrouded in mystery, and felt out of my grasp.  But it’s a simple math equation.  End the day at a calorie deficit and you lose weight.  Simple as that.  Plus a bunch of handy tricks for keeping your metabolism up, like taking the stairs at work, drinking ice-water, tea, spices, etc.

I have before pictures from 3 weeks ago.  When I reach my goal of 155 I will take new pictures.  And if I’m feeling confident enough, maybe I’ll post them on here to show the difference!

140 BPM

Cardio-Playlist

I’ve finally found a workout program that works for me.  I’ve been trying all sorts of different things over the past few months, focusing heavily on weight training.  But my main goal is to lose my gut so I can fit into all the nice clothes from 2 years ago.  So I’ve done a ton of research and found the most effective use of your time when trying to lose weight is cardio.  I’ve figured out my BMR, and through a combination of diet and 7 day a week cardio (elliptical at the gym), am on a 750 calorie deficit.  I’ve been on this for just under 2 weeks now, and I’m losing 1 pound every 2 days!  So far I’ve lost about 7 pounds!!  This is more results than I’ve seen in years and it really has me motivated.  At this rate, in 1 month I’ll be visibly thinner, and in 2 months I should look pretty damn good!

My cardio is one to one and a half hours on the elliptical every day.  I tend to do half an hour of interval, then an hour of sustained.  I’ve actually really started to love it.  It’s a great way to work out any stress of the day, and when I’m done I feel fantastic.  I just put on my iPod and get lost in the music until I’m done.  And for that reason I made a playlist explicitly for using while doing cardio.  With this in mind all the songs are around 140 bpm, this way if I go the beat, I’m getting about 140 strides per minute, which keeps my heart at about 125 bpm which is the weight-loss zone.  The playlist is about an hour and half as well, the perfect length for my work out.

I’ve included the playlist.  You can hear it by pressing play on the playlist to the right, but for those of you also working out, or planning to start, give my playlist a shot for your cardio!  For a limited time you can download it from this link!  Just chuck it on your iPod!  The order is somewhat important, as there is peaks and valleys for interval, and it starts with a warm up song and ends with a cool-down song!

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3206439/140%20BPM.zip

And the playlist:

  1. MCP – Grid Runners
  2. Innerpartysystem – Last Night In Brooklyn
  3. Midnight Juggernauts – Safari World
  4. Mimosa – Get ‘Em
  5. La Roux – Tigerlily
  6. Grafton Primary – Relativity (Tommy Trash Remix)
  7. Royksopp – Tricky Tricky
  8. The Presets – My People
  9. She Wants Revenge – Tear You Apart
  10. Hot Chip – Ready For The Floor
  11. Zero 7 – Mr. Mcgee
  12. Hercules And Love Affair – Blind
  13. Grafton Primary – Telling Lies
  14. Royksopp – The Girl And The Robot
  15. The Presets – A New Sky
  16. M83 – We Own The Sky
  17. Tiesto – Elements Of Life
  18. Van She – Kelly
  19. Imogen Heap & Tiesto – Hide & Seek (remix)
Good luck on losing weight and getting in shape!  Enjoy the soundtrack!

Full Force

Earlier this summer/spring, during my 3 months off, I started eating healthy and working out.  It didn’t last as long as it should have, mainly because I didn’t entirely know what I was doing, and didn’t have the proper equipment and wasn’t willing to go to a gym.  Well Chad has a good history with working out so we started working out again and I’m learning from his experience.  I’ve sucked it up and started going to a gym.  We have one in the building at work, and it’s a free membership!  I’m back to eating extra healthy and on a schedule.  My goal is to look great by winter.  Shame it won’t be fast enough for this summer, but next year I should look (and feel) great!

Life Is Good

I went grocery shopping today and considered buying a scale.  I decided against it since the weight training will be putting on muscle and muscle is heavier than fat, so a scale wouldn’t be very informative in the end.  BUT I did weight myself while I was there and I’ve lost 5 pounds since I was in Winnipeg!  Go me!  I bought more healthy stuff, including much more fruits for snacking!  Apples and Kiwi!  I also bought a multivitamin and some whey protein!

While I was at Wal-Mart I got a call from BioWare telling me they were mailing me my official offer letter.  So it’s now 100%, I’m back at BioWare on May 3rd.  I’m also applying for a new fulltime position that was recently posted, and think I have a real shot!  But I’m not going to talk too much about that until I know the results.  Even if I don’t get it, I’m just glad to be going back to work, even if it’s just as a term!

Tomorrow Never Comes

Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task.  ~William James

For as long as I can remember my friends have told me I should eat healthier, maybe workout.  Over the last few years, this last one especially, I’ve watched the pounds add up, and continually told myself I’d start working out soon, later, tomorrow.  It’s been this way with many of my goals in life.  They were abstract, not something I felt I could actually reach out and grasp, but a light at the end of the eternal tunnel.

I’ve been having a bit of a paradigm shift lately.  I’ve been making the most of my 3 months off.  I wake up early, work out first thing in the morning, shower, have a healthy lunch, do Unreal training, etc.  My days have been extremely productive.  At first this schedule was really hard to maintain.  Waking up early did not come naturally to me, I was incredibly out of shape so working out gave me a headache and made me feel like crap, and I’d spent years making a habit of procrastination.  Breaking these routines and excuses was tough.  But I forced myself.

As I caught up on everything I’d let slide, all the things I swore I’d do someday, I began to feel elated…  Moment to moment life felt so much better knowing there wasn’t a dozen tasks hanging over my head.  When I have a free moment, it truly feels free.  NOTHING is nagging at me, and instead of guilt for not doing what I know I should be, I feel pride in the reward of a truly free moment.

It’s like I’ve been in debt for most of my life.  And I don’t mean financially.  I owed this many tasks, to that many causes.  But I wasn’t budgeting, and in reality I was falling further behind from my goals, not catching up.

I’m finally catching up, finally making tangible progress.  And the light at the end of the tunnel is getting bigger as I get closer.  There will always be another goal after, but for the first time I’m actually making constant progress towards real goals, and every day offers their own rewards on the way.

I’ve learned procrastination is the enemy of happiness.  All the things you put off, you put in between yourself and your goals, your happiness.  You are opting for more obstacles, just to maintain your inertia.  And those obstacles pile up until they obstruct the light from reaching you.  It’s time to clear the tracks, full steam ahead.  The light at the end of the tunnel is not abstract, it’s there and can be reached.

Twenty Four Minute Workout

I’d work out with this girl any time.  I doubt I’d last 5 minutes with her though…  Working out I mean…  What?

Pasta!

I cooked my own pasta today!  Part of eating healthy is no more pre-cooked microwavable meals.  I’m so proud!
